CAPITOL SQUARE
9TH STREET TO GOVERNOR STREET AND BROAD STREET TO BANK STREET
- Virginia’s capital moved from Williamsburg to Richmond in 1780. Shockoe Hill was selected as the location for a new capitol building, providing a panoramic view of the James River.
- In 1850, John Notman was selected to redesign the grounds. He added fountains and wide, curving paths. His ideas are the basis for the grounds today.
- The Capitol Square statues pay tribute to George Washington and Virginia civil rights leaders, among others.
