About
The Quoit Club takes its name from Richmond's popular early-19th century sporting club that, in the words of its most famous member, Chief Justice John Marshall, "met on genial Saturdays to eat, drink and otherwise make merry." The game of quoits is an ancestor of modern horseshoes.
Today, the Quoit Club is a membership organization for the young and young at heart. It's goal is to support HRF's efforts in preserving Richmond's unique architectural and historical heritage through tours, social activities, educational programs, and preservation projects that raise awareness about the Foundation and the importance of historic preservation.

Excerpt from "Marshall Law," by Harry Kollatz in the July 2001 Richmond Magazine:
"Come weekends, he would ride to Buchanan's Spring, just outside of town, to join 30 pals (including the governor) in playing quoits. They called themselves Richmond's Quoits, or Barbecue Club.
Quoits is a version of horseshoes, using flat, doughnut-shaped discs. Marshall's quoits were heavy, rough iron, and none of the other members could heft them like he could.
Discussion of politics or religion was forbidden. The members of the Richmond Quoits drank rum punch and mint juleps, then debated whose quoit got closest to the peg."

Part of the Quoit Club's mission is to support Historic Richmond Foundation's efforts in preserving Richmond's architectural heritage. HRF's operating fund depends solely on private contributions, and we encourage Quoit Club members to make a gift to the Foundation.
