CAPITOL SQUARE

9TH STREET TO GOVERNOR STREET AND BROAD STREET TO BANK STREET

  1. Virginia’s capital moved from Williamsburg to Richmond in 1780. Shockoe Hill was selected as the location for a new capitol building, providing a panoramic view of the James River.
  2. In 1850, John Notman was selected to redesign the grounds. He added fountains and wide, curving paths. His ideas are the basis for the grounds today.
  3. The Capitol Square statues pay tribute to George Washington and Virginia civil rights leaders, among others.
