News about the Elmira Shelton House Gate
The valuable cast iron gate that was stolen from the Elmira Shelton house (c.1844) in Church Hill on March 24th has been returned. On April 15th a man brought it to the police department in Church Hill and then later admitted to stealing it. The Elmira house served as HRF's headquarters for nearly 20 years.

Jack Mitchell informed HRF immediately when the gate was missing and we sent out news alerts throughout the city. Thanks to this coverage, the alleged thief was unable to sell the gate and it has thankfully been restored to its rightful place. The return of this gate is highly unusual, and we appreciate everyone's feedback and avid interest in protecting our valuable historic fabric.
