Quoit Club Presents A Guided Tour of Belle Isle Belle Isle
Since 1814, Belle Isle has been the site of numerous industrial operations, including a nail factory, iron foundry, granite quarry and hydroelectric plant. Additionally, during the Civil War, the island was home to the largest Confederacy military prison, which held as many as 10,000 Union prisoners at its peak in 1863. On Thursday, August 12, Join Quoit Club at 6:00 p.m. at the Belle Isle footbridge (under the Lee Bridge) and explore with us the island's hidden past and conversion back to nature on a guided tour with Brooks Smith, author of Facts and Legends of the Hills of Richmond and Songlines of Richmond: A Celebration of Performing Arts, Artists and Stages. A book signing and reception with appetizers and refreshments will follow the tour, and will be held at and sponsored by Dominion. Please wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate attire.

Where to Park:
From S. 5th Street, make a right onto Tredegar Street. Proceed down Tredegar Street and pass the Tredegar Iron Works to your right. Continue going straight and proceed to the security gate. Please stop at the guard station and inform the guard that you are there for the Historic Richmond Foundation/Quoit Event. The guard will then have you park in the parking deck to the right.

The tour will start in the Riverside Café, which is located on the 1st floor of the building directly across the parking deck.

Free for Members | $15 for nonmembers

Quoits & Kegs Sabot Hill
The Junior Board of Historic Richmond Foundation invites you to this year’s Quoits & Kegs event at the Van Der Hyde family home in Sabot Hill. It was named for Sabot Island, supposed to resemble a wooden shoe. Sabot Hill was completed for William T. Reed and his wife Mary Ross Scott Reed in 1937 on site of former home of James A. Seddon. Seddon was elected to the first Confederate Congress, and served as Secretary of War from 1862-1865. The earlier home dated from 1855, but burned in early 1920s.
We will play Quoits, indulge in delicious food and beverages, and, in the words of Chief Justice John Marshall, we will “eat, drink, and otherwise make merry.” Transportation will be provided to and from Byrd Park to Sabot Hill. Bring a blanket or lawn chair so you can relax and enjoy the games.

$25 Single | $40 Couple
