LOCAL ARTISTS CREATE PICTURE FRAMES OUT OF HISTORIC BUILDING MATERIAL
FOR NEW SILENT AUCTION FUNDRAISER
October 29, 2003, Richmond, VA -- Historic Richmond Foundation
(HRF) and the Art of Richmond have partnered for the First Annual
Frame Design Contest to benefit HRF. Local artists have been given
historic building materials and a photograph of vintage Richmond
from Dementi Studio, from which they will create a picture frame.
The finished artists' frames will be on display at the Art of
Richmond gallery in the Short Pump Town Center prior to the Silent
Auction and Awards Ceremony on December 5, 2003 at 7 p.m. The
event is free and open to the public.
"Richmond has one of the most reputed artistic communities
in the country, and this contest will capture historic Richmond
in a new way," said Katie Taylor, public relations manager
for HRF. "This is a new way for us to raise awareness about
the wealth of historic architecture in our city."
"This is the Art of Richmond's first charity venture, and
it was born out of the love of Richmond architecture and its preservation,"
said Kristy Ford, co-owner of the Art of Richmond. "It also
offers the Art of Richmond a means for combining creative, non-traditional
framing styles with traditional black and white photography."
The contest offers local artists a means for showcasing their
talent. Artists who have entered the contest range from sculpture
and photography students from the Virginia Commonwealth University
to long-time residents and artists in the Richmond area.
About the Art of Richmond
The concept for the Art of Richmond developed out of a joint venture
between two local Richmond entrepreneurs, Wayne Dementi and Kristy
Ford. Their partnership began in 2002 with the creation of the
Richmond Ornaments, a set of pewter ornaments framed around historic
black and white images of city legends and landmarks. Kristy,
formerly of C.L. Ford Jewelers, and Wayne, of Dementi Studio,
decided to expand their partnership the following year and open
a gallery which celebrated original prints, gifts, and jewelry
of Richmond.
